20 statistics that stress the importance of safety awareness and prevention at home and in the workplace

  1. Preventable Injuries are the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer.
  2. In 2017, the US experienced 169,936 preventable injury-related deaths.
  3. A preventable death occurs every 3 minutes.
  4. $1.034 billion in costs are associated with preventable injury and injury-related deaths.
  5. The top three leading causes of preventable injury-related death are poisoning, motor vehicles, and falls.
  6. Drug poisoning is now the No. 1 cause of unintentional death in the United States.
  7. Every day, more than 100 people die from drug poisoning/opioid drugs.  
  8. The number of preventable work deaths in 2017 totaled 4,414.
  9. Nearly 13,000 American workers suffer an avoidable injury every day.
  10. Work-related medically consulted injuries totaled 4.5 million in 2017.
  11. Total work injury costs were estimated at $161.5 billion.
  12. The 104,000,000 days lost in 2017 are a result of injuries that occurred in 2017 and days lost in 2017 from injuries that occurred in previous years.
  13. Days missed due to injuries in 2017 totaled 70,000,000.
  14. NSC estimates 55,000,000 additional days will be lost in the future due to on-the-job deaths and permanently disabling injuries that occurred in 2017.
  15. The top three leading causes of work-related injuries are overexertion and bodily reaction, contact with objects and equipment, and slips, trips, and falls.
  16. Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide.
  17. Every year, 2 million American workers report having been victims of workplace violence.
  18. Assaults are the fourth leading cause of work-related deaths.
  19. In 2017, work-related assaults resulted in 18,400 injuries and illnesses involving days away from work and 458 fatalities.
  20. Overexertion causes 35% of all work-related injuries and is the No. 1 reason for lost work days
